Melinda Beck wrote an interesting article for www.online.wsj.com on July 2, 2012, looking at the increased risk of heart attacks and kidney stones with people who took calcium supplements. The long and the short of the article is to become aware of how much calcium you are taking in supplement form. Remember that multivitamins contain calcium in varying amounts. Get you calcium, but try to get it from your food. Think dairy, soybeans, kale and spinach. If you have to take calcium supplements do not go over the recommended dosage. Adults need 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily. Women over 50 and men over 70 need 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily.
